Appleby's combination of big hitting and excellent short game should be an ideal fit for Augusta but his Masters record is something of a disappointment. Last year's tied 22nd was only the second time he'd cracked the top 25 in eight appearances and five of those had ended in missed cuts. The jury remains out on whether he'll ever be a genuine Masters contender but those who watched him win his second successive Mercedes Championship at the start of the year know that he's capable of beating the very best. A disastrous display at the Players Championship was hardly ideal preparation but surely Appleby will make his mark here one day.
