MASTERS DIARY - SUNDAY
Gary Martin, Total Golf
With seven consecutive birdies from holes 7-13 during his third round, Tiger Woods not only over-turned Chris DiMarco's lead to head the field for the first time, he also equalled a record set by Steve Pate in 1999. Woods also set a record for the most birdies in two consecutive rounds with 16 and tied with the record for the highest number of birdies in three consecutive rounds with 19. And as if that wasn't enough, Tiger's second and third round scores of 66 and 65 equalled his own record low for the middle 36 holes.
England's David Howell may need to raise his profile over here in the States. The Swindon man, who had featured prominently for much of the tournament, clearly isn't a name that the Yanks are familiar with. As he strolled down the second fairway on the final day two fans were talking and one asked the other where is “this David Howell from?” I had to bite my lip to remind them that he was part of Bernhard Langer's victorious Ryder Cup team last September.
After recording a bogey at his very first hole of the tournament, Chris DiMarco didn't drop another shot until he double-bogeyed the par-4 10th on Sunday morning during his third round – an incredible 44 holes. However it is still a long way short of the Masters record, which is held by Australia's Stuart Appleby – he went 50 consecutive holes without dropping a shot in 2001.
Masters visitors love a bet. Money is often staked on the outcome of a large number of putts, money, drinks or a meal. So next time you hear huge cheers greeting the sinking of a 20 footer for birdie, it might not necessarily just be the appreciation of the putt.
This year's event has been a stop-start affair, especially over the opening two days. But it's not just rain and the threat of electrical storms that have caused interruption to play. Luke Donald and Tim Herron were walking to their balls down the 9th fairway on the final afternoon when someone suffered an awkward fall on the public crossing 100 yards or so in front of the green. Falling face first, they were clearly hurt. Medical assistance was called and there was a delay of at least five minutes before the players were able to play their approach shots. Both walked to the 10th tee with pars.
Chris DiMarco had to replace his driver halfway through the final round. After hitting it on the par-5 8th he realised the head was loose. A quick word with a rules official and a replacement 1-wood was in his bag by the time he stepped onto the 9th tee.
