MICKELSON'S SPIKES PROMPT INQUIRY
The day after Tiger Woods was spoken to by officials at the Masters defending
champion Phil Mickelson had the same thing happen to him.
It was a very different problem, though.
Woods was involved in a rules inquiry over a tap-in putt, but did not receive
a two-stroke penalty because the television evidence was "inconclusive."
Mickelson was questioned about the spikes on his golf shoes after Vijay Singh,
playing in the group behind, told a referee he thought the left-hander had
caused spike marks on the 12th green.
On inspection it was decided that the shoes did not need changing.
