(key: 1 = hardest, 18 = easiest)
1st (Tea Olive), 435 yards, par four: the hardest hole last year. The fairway
bunker on the right is now a 300-yard carry, but the main trouble comes on and
around the green, one of the toughest on the course. Long or left and escaping
with a par is an achievement.
2004: 13 birdies, 165 pars, 85 bogeys, 8 doubles, 3 worse. Average: 4.35.
Rank: 1 Mickelson: 4-4-4-4
2nd (Pink Dogwood), 575 yards, par five: big-hitters come into their own here,
but long or left are bad again - far more birdies come from laying up short or
going in the guarding bunkers. Nick Faldo once holed a 100-foot eagle putt on
this treacherous green.
2004: 5 eagles, 81 birdies, 162 pars, 24 bogeys, 1 double, 1 worse. Average:
4.77. Rank: 18 Mickelson: 4-5-5-4
3rd (Flowering Peach), 350 yards, par four: shortest par four on the course
and a real teaser. Ask Tiger Woods - a double bogey in 2003 put him out of the
hunt. The pear-shaped green with steep slope in front allows for some wicked pin
placings.
2004: 39 birdies, 192 pars, 39 bogeys, 4 doubles. Average: 4.02. Rank: 14
Mickelson: 4-3-3-5
4th (Flowering Crab Apple), 205 yards, par three: wind is a big factor to
another undulating green which slopes from back to front and has deep bunkers
short and left. Jeff Sluman achieved the only hole-in-one here in 1992.
2004: 13 birdies, 188 pars, 67 bogeys, 5 doubles, 1 worse. Average: 3.24.
Rank: 5 Mickelson: 3-4-3-3
5th (Magnolia), 455 yards, par four: Jack Nicklaus twice holed his second shot
in 1995. The fairway bunkers down the left have been enlarged, making it more of
a dogleg and tougher - even before you get to yet another headache-inducing
green.
2004: 20 birdies, 167 pars, 79 bogeys, 7 doubles, 1 worse. Average: 4.27.
Rank: 4 Mickelson: 5-4-4-5
6th (Juniper), 180 yards, par three: from an elevated tee down to a vast green
with a huge slope in it, making correct clubbing crucial. Jose Maria Olazabal
took seven in 1991 - and ended up losing by one to Ian Woosnam. Chris DiMarco
achieved the fourth hole-in-one here last year.
2004: 1 eagle, 24 birdies, 186 pars, 52 bogeys, 11 doubles. Average: 3.17.
Rank: 10 Mickelson: 3-3-3-4
7th (Pampas), 410 yards, par four: what used to be a birdie chance is now 45
yards longer and much more demanding both off the tee and with the approach to a
narrow, raised green surrounded by sand.
2004: 1 eagle, 44 birdies, 160 pars, 68 bogeys, 1 double. Average: 4.08. Rank:
12 Mickelson: 3-4-3-4
8th (Yellow Jasmine), 570 yards, par five: the enlarged right bunker, about
300 yards out, demands an accurate drive and the further left of that you go the
harder it is to find the undulating green up the steep hill.
2004: 3 eagles, 72 birdies, 172 pars, 22 bogeys, 5 doubles. Average: 4.83.
Rank: 15 Mickelson: 5-5-4-5
9th (Carolina Cherry), 460 yards, par four: the tee has been pushed back 30
yards, meaning most approaches are now played off a downhill lie to a raised
green which tilts sharply from back to front. Anything rolling off can continue
down for 50-60 yards.
2004: 35 birdies, 180 pars, 51 bogeys, 6 doubles, 2 worse. Average: 4.12.
Rank: 11 Mickelson: 4-4-4-4
10th (Camellia), 495 yards, par four: a huge drop from tee to green and a big
right-to-left shot required to get the ball running the maximum distance down
the hill. Any drive right a leaves a longer and tougher second. Len Mattiace
double-bogeyed it in the 2003 play-off.
2004: 1 eagle, 21 birdies, 188 pars, 55 bogeys, 8 doubles, 1 worse. Average:
4.18. Rank: 8 Mickelson: 4-4-4-4
11th (White Dogwood), 490 yards, par four: the start of Amen Corner. Trees
have been added down the right, while the green is guarded short, left and long
by water. Larry Mize had his amazing chip-in here to win the 1987 play-off and
Nick Faldo's first two wins came on the hole.
2004: 1 eagle, 19 birdies, 165 pars, 78 bogeys, 10 doubles, 1 worse. Average:
4.29. Rank: 3 Mickelson: 3-4-4-4
12th (Golden Bell), 155 yards, par three: probably the most famous par three
in golf. Narrow target, water in front, trouble at the back, it's seen
everything from a one to Tom Weiskopf's 13. The wind plays all sorts of tricks.
2004: 42 birdies, 168 pars, 41 bogeys, 19 doubles, 4 worse. Average: 3.18.
Rank: 9 Mickelson: 3-2-3-2
13th (Azalea), 510 yards, par five: massive dogleg left where scores have
ranged from Jeff Maggert's albatross two to Tommy Nakajima's 13. Rae's Creek
runs down the left and then in front of the green. End of Amen Corner.
2004: 7 eagles, 89 birdies, 135 pars, 31 bogeys, 12 doubles. Average: 4.82.
Rank: 16 Mickelson: 5-4-5-4
14th (Chinese Fir), 440 yards, par four: no bunkers, but three putts are
common on a green which is one of the most testing in golf. Joint course record
holder Nick Price once took eight here.
2004: 27 birdies, 169 pars, 67 bogeys, 11 doubles. Average: 4.22. Rank: 6
Mickelson: 4-4-4-3
15th (Firethorn), 500 yards, par five: regularly rated the easiest hole, but
still a potential card-wrecker. The green tilts towards the water and like the
12th and 13th thrills and spills come thick and fast.
2004: 9 eagles, 90 birdies, 137 pars, 30 bogeys, 6 doubles, 2 worse. Average:
4.78. Rank: 17 Mickelson: 5-5-5-5
16th (Redbud), 170 yards, par three: Padraig Harrington and Kirk Triplett aced
this within minutes of each other last year. More water and inevitably more
drama with a green that slopes from right to left. Toughest pin is back right,
but hole offers birdie chance on final day when hole is cut back left and is a
bigger target.
2004: 2 eagles, 47 birdies, 169 pars, 51 bogeys, 5 doubles. Average: 3.03.
Rank: 13 Mickelson: 5-3-3-2
17th (Nandina), 425 yards, par four: the Eisenhower Tree is in front of the
tee, but control of the second shot determines success or failure. No such thing
as an easy putt by this stage and going long or right leaves a fearsomely
difficult up and down.
2004: 26 birdies, 182 pars, 55 bogeys, 9 doubles, 2 worse. Average: 4.19.
Rank: 7 Mickelson: 4-3-4-4
18th (Holly), 465 yards, par four: one of the toughest holes again after the
tee was moved back 60 yards. Drive is played through an avenue of trees and is
steeply uphill. The fairway bunker from which Sandy Lyle got up and down to win
in 1988 is now 300 yards away.
2004: 20 birdies, 156 pars, 84 bogeys, 11 doubles, 3 worse. Average: 4.34.
Rank: 2 Mickelson: 4-4-4-3
