Phil Mickelson's previous near-misses in majors:
1994 US PGA: 3rd. One behind Nick Price and Colin Montgomerie with his
first-round 68, Mickelson is four back with a day left. But Price is unstoppable
and wins by six.
1995 US Open: 4th. One behind Greg Norman and Tom Lehman after three days, all
three are overtaken by Corey Pavin. Mickelson finishes four behind after a
four-over-par 74 .
1996 Masters: 3rd. An opening 65 puts Mickelson second, two behind Norman. But
he does not break par the rest of the week and finishes one behind Norman, six
behind Nick Faldo.
1999 US Open: 2nd. Joint leader after each of the first two rounds, Mickelson
battles all the way with Payne Stewart, who dramatically wins by one with an
18-foot par putt.
2001 Masters: 3rd. One behind Tiger Woods with a round to go, Mickelson can
deny Woods a clean sweep of all four majors. But Woods (68) does it and
Mickelson (70) doesn't.
2001 US PGA: 2nd. With three 66s and then a 68 Mickelson records the lowest
total in major history. But only for a minute - David Toms holes 12-foot putt to
beat him by one.
2002 Masters: 3rd. The leaderboard is packed with the game's biggest names,
but Mickelson starts the final day four behind Woods and he ends it four behind,
both scoring 71.
2002 US Open: 2nd. It's that man Woods again. He captures his seventh win in
11 majors and Mickelson is once more the bridesmaid, finishing three behind.
2003 Masters: 3rd. Mickelson is again four behind with 18 to play and this
shoots 68. But it is not enough. Mike Weir and Len Mattiace finish two ahead.
