Tiger Woods and defending champion Mike Weir both had holes-in-one in the
eve-of-Masters par-three competition at Augusta National today.
Woods aced the 135-yard ninth - and was almost followed in seconds later by
Arnold Palmer.
The shot gave the world number one a four-under-par 23 for the fun nine-hole
event and made him the early clubhouse leader. No winner of the par three has
ever gone on to capture the Masters title four days later.
Weir's ace came on the 70-yard second hole.
There were soon two more holes-in-one. Jay Haas matched the one by Woods and
Welshman Phillip Price, making his Masters debut at the age of 37, aced the
115-yard seventh.
But still Woods led in the clubhouse. Would he be the one to carry the jinx
into the tournament proper?
Padraig Harrington did not have an ace, but he did equal Woods' total of 23 and
they then had to wait to see if they would be in a play-off.
