  • (key: 1 = hardest, 18 = easiest)

    1st (Tea Olive), 435 yards, par 4
The fairway bunker on the right is a 300-yard carry, but the main trouble comes on and around the green, one of the toughest on the course. Long or left and you are immediately happy to make par.

    2003: Rank 5. Average 4.296. 14 birdies, 179 pars, 84 bogeys, 7 double bogeys.

    2nd (Pink Dogwood), 575 yards, par 5
Two big hits now to get on since tee was pushed back. Long or left are bad again - far more birdies come from laying up short or going in the guarding bunkers. Nick Faldo once holed a 100-foot eagle putt on this treacherous green.

    2003: Rank 17. Average 4.859. 1 eagle, 83 birdies, 165 pars, 27 bogeys, 6 double bogeys, 2 worse.

    3rd (Flowering Peach), 350 yards, par 4
Shortest par four on the course and a real teaser. Ask Tiger Woods - he double-bogeyed it last year. The pear-shaped green with steep slope in front allows for some wicked pin placings.

    2003: Rank 13. Average 4.046. 47 birdies, 184 pars, 47 bogeys, 5 double bogeys, 1 worse.

4th (Flowering Crab Apple), 205 yards, par 3
Wind is a big factor to another undulating green which slopes from back to front and has deep bunkers short and left. Jeff Sluman (1992, four-iron) scored the only ace here in Masters history.

    2003: Rank 7. Average 3.222. 23 birdies, 181 pars, 74 bogeys, 6 double bogeys.

    5th (Magnolia), 455 yards, par 4
Jack Nicklaus twice holed his second shot here in 1995. The fairway bunkers down the left have been enlarged, making it more of a dogleg and tougher - even before you get to yet another headache-inducing green.

    2003: Rank 6. Average 4.229. 1 eagle, 20 birdies, 184 pars, 72 bogeys, 6 double bogeys, 1 worse.

    6th (Juniper), 180 yards, par 3
From an elevated tee down to a vast green with a huge slope in it, making correct clubbing crucial. Jose Maria Olazabal took seven in 1991 - and ended up losing by one to Ian Woosnam.

    2003: Rank 8. Average 3.222. 23 birdies, 184 pars, 68 bogeys, 9 double bogeys.

    7th (Pampas), 410 yards, par 4
What used to be a birdie chance is now 45 yards longer and much more demanding both off the tee with the approach to a narrow, raised green surrounded by sand.

    2003: Rank 14. Average 4.035. 1 eagle, 55 birdies, 167 pars, 55 bogeys, six double bogeys.

    8th (Yellow Jasmine), 570 yards, par 5
The enlarged right bunker, about 300 yards out, demands an accurate drive and the further left of that you go the more the treeline comes into play and the harder it is to find the undulating green up the steep hill.

    2003: Rank 15. Average 4.940. 2 eagles, 65 birdies, 175 pars, 34 bogeys, six double bogeys, 2 worse.

    9th (Carolina Cherry), 460 yards, par 4
The tee has been pushed back 30 yards, meaning most approaches are now played off a downhill lie to a raised green which tilts sharply from back to front. Anything rolling off can continue down for 50-60 yards.

    2003: Rank 9. Average 4.211. 25 birdies, 182 pars, 69 bogeys, 8 double bogeys.

    10th (Camellia), 495 yards, par 4
A huge drop from tee to green and a big right-to-left shot required to get the ball running the maximum distance down the hill. Any drive right a leaves a longer and tougher second. Len Mattiace double-bogeyed it in last year's play-off.

    2003: Rank 3. Average 4.313. 22 birdies, 166 pars, 85 bogeys, 8 double bogeys, 3 worse.

    11th (White Dogwood), 490 yards, par 4
The start of Amen Corner was the toughest hole last year. Trees added down the right since make it a more demanding drive, while the green is guarded short, left and long by water. Larry Mize had his amazing chip-in here to win the 1987 play-off and Nick Faldo's first two wins came on the hole.

    2003: Rank 1. Average 4.412. 17 birdies, 152 pars, 97 bogeys, 17 double bogeys, 1 worse.

    12th (Golden Bell), 155 yards, par 3
Probably the most famous par three in golf. Narrow target, water in front, trouble at the back, it's seen everything from a one to Tom Weiskopf's 13. The wind plays all sorts of tricks and the hole is guaranteed drama every year.

    2003: Rank 4. Average 3.303. 22 birdies, 182 pars, 62 bogeys, 13 double bogeys, 5 worse.

    13th (Azalea), 510 yards, par 5
Massive dogleg left where scores have ranged from Jeff Maggert's albatross two to Tommy Nakajima's 13. Rae's Creek runs down the left and then in front of the green. End of Amen Corner and while it's an obvious chance to make up ground it's wrecked many a round.

    2003: Rank 16. Average 4.915. 3 eagles, 83 birdies, 145 pars, 45 bogeys, 5 double bogeys, 3 worse.

    14th (Chinese Fir), 440 yards, par 4
No bunkers, but three putts are common on a green which is one of the most testing in golf. Joint course record holder Nick Price once took eight here.

    2003: Rank 10. Average 4.197. 31 birdies, 173 pars, 73 bogeys, 7 double bogeys.

    15th (Firethorn), 500 yards, par 5
Regularly the easiest hole according to the statistics, but still a potential card-wrecker. In range for the entire field off a good drive, but there's water to carry and the front of the green tilts towards it. Like the 12th and 13th thrills and spills come thick and fast.

    2003: Rank 18. Average 4.771. 5 eagles, 96 birdies, 150 pars, 26 bogeys, 6 double bogeys, 1 worse.

    16th (Redbud), 170 yards, par 3
More water and inevitably more drama with a green that slopes significantly from right to left. Toughest pin is back right, but hole offers birdie chance on final day when hole is cut back left and is a bigger target.

    2003: Rank 11. Average 3.141. 41 birdies, 172 pars, 63 bogeys, 6 double bogeys, 2 worse.

    17th (Nandina), 425 yards, par 4
Eisenhower Tree is the infamous pine in front of the tee, but it is control of the second shot which determines success or failure. No such thing as an easy putt by this stage and going long or right leaves fearsomely difficult up and down.

    2003: Rank 12. Average 4.130. 33 birdies, 191 pars, 50 bogeys, 10 double bogeys.

    18th (Holly), 465 yards, par 4
One of the toughest holes again after the tee was moved back 60 yards. Drive is played through an avenue of trees and is steeply uphill. The fairway bunker from which Sandy Lyle got up and down to win in 1988 is now 300 yards away.

    2003: Rank 2. Average 4.410. 13 birdies, 158 pars, 97 bogeys, 13 double bogeys, 3 worse.
