MONTY'S MASTERS NIGHTMARE
By Phil Casey, PA Sport, Augusta
Colin Montgomerie crashed out of the Masters on Saturday after his worst ever
performance at Augusta.
Montgomerie added a second round 76 to his opening 78 for a 10 over par total
of 154, five shots outside the cut and only good enough for a share of 62nd in
the 93-strong field.
As well as being his worst halfway total in 12 Masters appearances by four
shots, it was also the Scot's second worst display ever in 46 major
championships.
The 39-year-old was 11 over par in missing the cut in last year's US Open,
although that was on the very tough Bethpage Park course in New York, a par 70
measuring 7,214 yards.
He was 13 over par at the Open championship last year, but that was after four
rounds at Muirfield of 74-64-84-75.
Montgomerie had two holes to play of his second round this morning, the par
five eighth and par four ninth, finishing birdie-par.
"I lost interest when I didn't hole my second shot on the eighth hole," the
former European number one joked. "I knew I needed to finish two-one
(albatross-albatross) to make the cut but I couldn't reach the eighth.
"I'm disappointed but I've missed the cut here before and it didn't hurt
me."
Asked if he was glad to be heading home after a long spell in America in which
he made the cut once in six strokeplay events and lost in the first round of the
Accenture Matchplay, Montgomerie said: "Not necessarily.
"I have enjoyed it over here but I just haven't played well."
Montgomerie's next tournament could be the Benson and Hedges International
next month at the Belfry, scene of his brilliant performance in the Ryder Cup
when he finished as top points scorer with four and a half points out of five.
