Toms took his place among the golfing elite by winning the USPGA Championship at Atlanta Country Club last year. To followers of the man from Louisiana it didn't come as a shock. The 34-year-old has been one of the most improved players in the game over the last three years, notching up seven US Tour wins. One of the keys has been Toms' ability to hold onto leads when hitting the front and he did just that in his USPGA triumph last year when holding off world number two Phil Mickelson down the stretch. Toms first made his mark in the majors with a tied sixth place at the 1998 Masters when he raced through the field with a sparkling eight-under-par 64 in the final round. He hasn't been able to hit such heights on his subsequent visits but he's in solid form this year and as the most recent winner of a major title he will have plenty of confidence when he steps onto the first tee.
