Woosnam - missed the cut in Augusta. (Allsport)
OLD GUARD FEELING THE STRAIN
By Mark Garrod, PA Sport Golf Correspondent, Augusta
Three of Europe's former Masters champions have made sorry exits from
Augusta.
Sandy Lyle, first British winner in 1988, had his worst-ever round on the
course when he shot 81 on Friday.
Ian Woosnam, 11 years on from his victory, matched his worst-ever 36-hole
total with rounds of 77 and 78.
And Seve Ballesteros, champion in 1980 and 1983, equalled his highest-ever
score when he too returned an 81.
The trio finished 10 over, 11 over and 12 over par respectively.
In the defence of Ballesteros and Woosnam, though, they did have some back
problems, while in Lyle's case the explanation is simply rust.
The 44-year-old Scot, who has now missed the halfway cut in six of the last
eight years, no longer has a US Tour card and said: "You really need to play
some (tournament) golf before the Masters.
"You're asking the impossible to get fired up for a major. But I'll go back
to Scotland now and get ready for some European events."
Ballesteros and Woosnam are hoping their fitness will improve in time for next
week's Seve Trophy at Druids Glen in Ireland.
They will be on opposite sides then. The Spaniard captains the Continent of
Europe team, Woosnam represents Britain and Ireland.
Paul Lawrie and Swede Niclas Fasth missed the cut as well, Lawrie
for the third time in three starts.
