SIX YOUNG MASTERS IN THE MAKING
By Mark Garrod, PA Sport Golf Correspondent, Augusta
Tiger Woods, a mere 26, wonders whether to put himself in the veteran category
with so many younger faces around at Augusta.
Here are six who hope to make an impact - if not here, then certainly in the
future:
BUBBA DICKERSON. Age 20. Born Jacksonville, United States.
Paired with Tiger Woods in the first two rounds as a Masters tradition is that
the US Amateur champion always plays with the defending champion. Real name
Benjamin. First to win US Amateur and Western Amateur in same year since Woods
in 1994. Made cut at Bay Hill last month.
SERGIO GARCIA. Age 22. Born Castellon, Spain.
Already in the world's top five and already a star. Second to Woods in the
1999 US PGA, youngest-ever Ryder Cup player a month later, three times a winner
in America and three times in Europe. One of the favourites this week on the
course where he was the leading amateur just three years ago.
MICHAEL HOEY. Age 23. Born Ballymoney, Northern Ireland.
Reigning British amateur champion set to turn pro after the Masters, where he
would love to become first Briton ever to collect silver cup as leading amateur.
Has to make cut first, but was 12th in Dubai last month, 11th in the Scottish
Open last year and member of winning Walker Cup team.
CHARLES HOWELL. Age 22. Born Augusta, United States.
Yes, a hometown kid who at the age of seven watched Larry Mize, another
Augusta native, win. First played the course when he was 10. Became American
college champion and last season Rookie of the Year on the US Tour, winning over
1.5 million US dollars (£1million). Thinks he can win - and may well do so down
the road.
MATT KUCHAR. Age 23. Born Winter Park, United States.
Played in 1998 as US Amateur champion and finished 21st to earn a return trip
the next year, when he again made the cut. Also had 14th place in US Open before
turning pro last season. Won the Honda Classic last month to make world's top 50
on the day they were all invited to the Masters.
ADAM SCOTT. Age 21. Born Adelaide, Australia.
Twice a winner on the European Tour already, including Qatar Masters last
month. Has Tiger Woods-style swing - no surprise since Butch Harmon has been his
coach since college days. Reached world's top 50 at the end of 2001 to earn
Masters debut and Greg Norman gives him a "very, very good chance of
winning".
