TOMS DEFENDING TITLE
Tiger Woods is just one defending champion at the Masters in Augusta this
week.
David Toms is another, having last year won the eve-of-tournament par three
competition with a five-under-par 22, and was putting his title on the line
today.
The reigning US PGA champion will not mind a bit if he fails. Since the event
was introduced in 1960 no par-three winner has gone on to be Masters champion
four days later.
Toms, in fact, was the first since Tom Watson in 1982 to win a Major the same
year, let alone the same week.
Sandy Lyle took the title in 1997 and 1998 and remains the only European to be
successful in the fun event, designed to entertain the crowd - and players -
before the serious business starts.
