Tiger Woods (66): "I've been playing well and I'm just trying to build on that. Today I got off to a nice start, I hit a couple of bunkers in the back nine
which cost me a couple of shots but overall I'm very pleased with six-under."
Mark Hensby (67): "I don't have any expectations. Nobody expects me to win any tournament. Majors require a good short game and most of the time I've got that. My goal is to win a major, but if the big-hitters like Tiger or Vijay (Singh) are on you don't really have a chance."
Retief Goosen (68): "I'm still not hitting it as correct or as good as I know I can hit it. I'm not driving as well as I'd like. I hit one really good drive and that
was on nine. It was cooler so the ball went shorter than in practice. At (holes) 15, 16
and 17 you had fairly long second shots. The good thing was I putted better today, and that's the difference."
Luke Donald (68): "It's hard to put it into
words but it was a real treat playing with Jack and Tom. They don't like losing to each other and you could see that on the first
when Tom holed a birdie putt from 10ft and Jack followed him straight in. I played fabulously, kept it out of trouble and had some fun."
Jose Maria Olazabal (68): "I'm really happy to be able to play the event and I guess by being here I'm trying to enjoy it as much as I can."
Simon Dyson (70): "It was excellent teeing off first. I'd like to be first in every tournament.
My legs went a little bit when my name was announced, knowing I would be hitting
off first, but it was a nice moment."
Mark Calcavecchia (70): "My day actually started at 2.09. That's when I
woke up. My wife had a sneezing attack and I was ready to get up anyway. We slept yesterday and then went to bed at nine. I'll be ready for another
nap this afternoon."
Colin Montgomerie (71): "Getting a 71 is okay. It gives me something to work on tomorrow, a couple of birdies and suddenly you are three under."
Lloyd Saltman (73): "Overall I am quite happy. For 15 holes I played very well. I was a bit nervous at the first but I got off to a flying start. Now I want to be in at the weekend for a chance of a medal."
Sandy Lyle (74): "I was trying to keep it tight right on 17 for where the pin was and hit a bad
shot. Other than that I played OK. I would have hoped to be around the 70 mark,
but I couldn't buy the birdie putts and there were several shots that frittered
away, which was annoying."
Todd Hamilton (74): "I
didn't take it any differently to last year and obviously the bookmakers didn't either. I was
200/1! I didn't really play all that terrible, but didn't get anything out of my
round. The greens were awfully slow for my taste, but I know they have to be like
that because of the wind. I know it's a kind of cliche, but I tried to treat it like any other
tournament."
Jack Nicklaus (75): "I probably
got what I deserved but I'm disappointed overall to shoot 75. I still think I have the opportunity to make the cut but I know I need a
good round tomorrow."
Lee Westwood (76): "(Of first-hole setbacck) It's becoming a trend. Wrong club. I had 99 (yards) to the front, but it was straight into the wind and cold,
so the ball wasn't going as far. I didn't hit that many good shots and it was just one of those days."
