THE OPEN PROFILE
Toms joined the upper echelon with a flood of US Tour wins in the late 1990s and early 2000s. It culminated in a first Major title at the 2001 USPGA and many believe more will follow. He's played some superb golf this year, the highlight a brilliant win in the Accenture Match Play Championship at La Costa. He also topped the leaderboard in the US Open last month before fading to tied 15th. Interestingly, his standout performance in five trips to the Open came at St Andrews five years ago. Toms was second at halfway before eventually finishing tied fourth. Given his instant liking for the Old Course he could be one to watch on his return.
