Hansen - even went out of bounds.
66 A NEW BEST FOR HANSEN
A 45-foot eagle putt on the final green gave Dane Soren Hansen his best-ever
score in the Open championship.
But good though a 66 was, it could have been even better.
Hansen drove out of
bounds on the long 14th and ran up a double bogey seven.
"It was the wrong hole to hit a bad shot on, but it was one bad shot in a
fabulous round," he said after improving from level par to six under.
"My shoulder dropped a bit after the out of bounds, but with that last putt
all of a sudden it's a fantastic round. I sort of had the mindset that I could
make it and it was one of many good putts."
Irish Open champion three years ago, the 31-year-old from Copenhagen is
playing just his fourth Open, but was eighth at Muirfield three years ago.
Hansen soon had company in the clubhouse on six under, but Northern Ireland's
Darren Clarke and Dutchman Maarten Lafeber were disappointed not be at least one
ahead of him. They both three-putted the last from long range for par fours and
rounds of 67.
Lafeber, who qualified for the championship by tieing for second with Clarke
in the Scottish Open, was seven under with three to play, but bogeyed the 16th.
Clarke had eight birdies, but also three bogeys.
