Hole 1 - Burn, 376 yards par 4: The fairway is wide and bunkerless, but the Swilken Burn runs across the face of the green.
Hole 2 - Dyke, 453 yards par 4: Hidden bunkers on both sides threaten the driving area and a steep ridge runs through the centre of the green.
Hole 3 - Cartgate-out, 397 yards par 4: The crescent shape of Cartgate bunker cuts deeply into the left side of the green.
Hole 4 - Ginger Beer, 480 yards par 4: A mound at the front and deep bunker to the left protect this green.
Hole 5 - Hole O'Cross-out, 568 yards par 5: The first of only two par fives on the Old Course. Seven bunkers threaten the right side, but the green is well within reach for today’s professionals.
Hole 6 - Heathery-out, 412 yards par 4: The tee shot is completely blind over a mass of gorse and heather and a hidden dip runs across the front of the green.
Hole 7 - High-out, 388 yards par 4: The start of the famous St. Andrews loop, a run of four short par fours and two par threes. The green lies beyond the huge expanse of Shell bunker.
Hole 8 - Short, 175 yards par 3: Large green is partly obscured by a ridge and lone bunker.
Hole 9 - End, 352 yards par 4: Two small but clearly visible bunkers are the only threat at a hole that is regularly driven.
Hole 10 - Bobby Jones, 379 yards par 4: Within range of the big hitters. The green drops away towards the back.
Hole 11 - High-in, 174 yards par 3: Deep bunkers guard both sides of the entrance to a severely sloping green.
Hole 12 - Heathery-in, 348 yards par 4: There are four unseen bunkers in the fairway, but many Open contenders can reach this green from the tee.
Hole 13 - Hole O'Cross-in, 465 yards par 4: The Coffins bunkers run down the left side and the approach is to a raised green.
Hole 14 - Long, 618 yards par 5: Unless the wind is strongly against, Hell bunker no longer poses much of a threat at this inward par five.
Hole 15 - Cartgate-in, 456 yards par 4: Plenty of room from the tee and the green gathers from both sides.
Hole 16 - Corner of the Dyke, 424 yards par 4: Out of bounds on the right and a large bunker in the centre of the fairway. The green rises sharply at the front.
Hole 17 - Road, 455 yards par 4: A drive over the out-of-bounds area on the right sets up the best approach to a narrow green bunkered at the front and backed by a road.
Hole 18 - Tom Morris, 357 yards par 4: Wide open fairway, but the deep Valley of Sin that fronts the green causes problems with the approach.
