Day One - July 15
Paul Casey (66): "I was very relaxed today. My coach Peter Kostis flew over this week to tune up the game and did a
fantastic job.
Gary Evans (68): "I gave myself chances at the first three holes but didn't make any of them so I was a little frustrated because you have got to play the front nine under par otherwise the back nine becomes awfully difficult, so it was happy days when I brought that in."
Ernie Els (69): "Everything went pretty smoothly until I made five at the 17th but
I suppose before I started out I would have taken 69, although I few I left one
or two shots out there."
Colin Montgomerie (69): "I'm not shying away from anything and I'm enjoying the whole experience,"
he agreed. "This Open couldn't have come at a better time for me or at a better
place."
Darren Clarke (69): "I played very nicely all day and putted the best I have all year.
Hopefully I can play as well in the second round."
Paul McGinley (69): "What a way to start the British Open. This is the
greatest golf tournament in the world and on a par with winning a place in the
Ryder Cup."
Tiger Woods (70): "I'm pleased, I played pretty well. I lost a couple of shots on the front nine but overall it was a good day. I
controlled the shots well."
Sandy Lyle (70): "Anything in red numbers (under par) is a nice feeling to have."
Ian Poulter (71): "It was good fun out there. People were smiling and laughing and I received a
few loud wolf whistles. That is what it is all about, it is good to go out there
and enjoy it and let them enjoy it as well."
Sergio Garcia (75): "I didn't hit the ball great but I don't feel that I deserved as bad a score
as I got. With a couple of good breaks here and there it might have been a 70."
Padraig Harrington (76): "If I could have got it back to two or three over I would have had a position
to play from but the good putts I hit weren't going in. I'm not too disappointed as I knew I wasn't playing great."
Paul Lawrie (78): "I didn't do an awful lot wrong. "I hit a couple of poor shots and got punished, but that's
links golf."
Tom Weiskopf (80): "I realise I don't have much of a game now. But it's been terrific
and I've been really enjoying myself this week."
