Scotland's Stuart Wilson, the only amateur to make the halfway cut at Royal
Troon, managed only a third round 77.
The British champion, a former assistant professional at Blairgowrie, will go
into the final day - his 27th birthday - on seven over par.
Wilson, who will also play in next April's Masters, was only two off the lead
after his brilliant first day 68, then slipped back to one over with a 75.
Paired with Lee Westwood he covered the first eight in level par, but bogeyed
the next five and had another on the 15th.
Just ahead of him former champion Sandy Lyle was having an even worst time,
crashing to an 81 and 11 over after an inward half of 44 which contained double
bogeys at the 10th and 15th and five bogeys.
A third Scot, Alastair Forsyth, who had been joint leader at five under after
16 holes of the first round, was another to struggle.
Two over when he stood on the 12th tee he triple-bogeyed it and then had
another seven on the 472-yard next.
