Tiger Woods made his FedEx Cup debut at TPC Boston but Camilo Villegas made his mark, shooting an eight-under-par 63 to take a two-shot lead after the opening round of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday.

Villegas had a bogey-free round with eight birdies to sit two strokes clear of both Canadian Mike Weir and Ryan Moore, who both shot six-under 65.

England's Brian Davis recorded a 68 with Justin Rose back on level par and Luke Donald struggling to a 72, one over alongside Open champion Padraig Harrington.

"I had a great day today, obviously. Putted great, eight birdies, no bogeys, kept the ball in play and rolled some beautiful putts," Villegas said.

"I was happy with my round. It's very early in the week, and it's time to keep it going."

Villegas had four birdies on each side.

He birdied four of his first seven holes to get off to a good start and closed his round with consecutive birdies.

The mistake-free round for Villegas extended a stretch of five straight events in which the 25-year-old has started with a round in the 60s.

"I felt very good, and the last month I've been hitting the ball awesome," Villegas said.

"I just needed to get a putt down here and there, and I did today, and it paid off.

A great round today."

Weir birdied his first two holes and added two more on the front nine. Another birdie at number 10 was followed by his only bogey of the day.

Weir added birdies at numbers 15 and 16 to grab a share of second.

Moore started on the back nine and had two birdies and an eagle at the par-five 18th.

He added three birdies on his first five holes of his final nine and had his only bogey of the day at number eight.

Woods finished the regular season with a commanding lead of 11,445 points in the Cup standings.

After points were adjusted at the start of the playoffs, Woods led Vijay Singh by 1,000 points.

After skipping last week's event, Woods entered Friday in fourth place in the standings, and he did not do much to help his cause.

The defending champion, Woods bogeyed the second and needed three shots to get out of a green-side bunker on the fourth hole, leading to a double-bogey.

"I was just trying to hit the ball right, right, right, and I just pulled it about five yards left of the flag," Woods said of the fourth hole.

"I was in the bunker, the only place you can't be."

It seemed Woods was getting in a groove with consecutive birdies at number six and seven but he could not maintain the momentum and finished his round with 11 straight pars.

At one-over 72, Woods is tied for 73rd.
