English pair Justin Rose and Ian Poulter blew a chance to be sitting with leader Nick Dougherty.
Disappointing finishes meant they ended with a 71 and 72 respectively having been under par for much of the opening day.
Colourful Poulter pulled his tee shot at the tough par-three eighth, his 17th hole, and found a heavy lie.
That resulted in a double bogey five but afterwards he was still upbeat.
"I wasn't too unhappy with that. I just made one wrong decision after he had been waiting on that tee for 10 minutes.
"But it was scoreable out there today and I could easily have finished under par."
Rose, who finished runner-up in this year's US Masters, began with a horrendous double bogey.
But he then joined Dougherty in the lead after a superb run of five birdies in his next 11 holes.
But with the outright lead in his sights, he finished with three bogeys in his last five holes to slip back to one-over-par.
Rose added later: "I made five birdies in my round and anytime you make five birdies around here that's a good day.
"So the key is to limit your mistakes and, unfortunately, I didn't manage to do that completely."
