Pettersen picked up birdies on the third and seventh before a superb inward half of 32 which featured birdies at the 12th, 13th, 16th and 18th.

At six under par, Pettersen joined Korean duo Sun Young Yoo and So Yeon Ryu at the top of the leaderboard, with 35 players in the 73-strong field breaking par at Twin Eagles Golf Club.

However, defending champion Hee Young Park could only manage a 76 to lie 10 shots off the lead, while Michelle Wie was dead last on nine over after an 81.

Park opened with three pars after starting on the 10th, but then carded three bogeys and a double bogey in the space of six holes to be out in 41.

The South Korean also ran up a double-bogey seven on the fifth, but did birdie the first, fourth and ninth to limit the damage.

Wie carded two birdies but also two double bogeys, a triple-bogey six on the par-three 12th and four bogeys.
