The two-time major winner banished the Friday blues with a second successive 66 to move four shots clear of Dustin Johnson, and he's a firm odds-on favourite to complete the job and win the Claret Jug for the first time in his career.
"McIlroy has had some luck with the draw, as have almost all of the players in contention, but he's been in sensational form over the first 36 holes and is going to be hard to beat," said Sky Bet's John Rhodes.
"We were happy enough to take him on before the event given that the forecast was for a real links test, but so far he's avoided the worst of the weather.
"We'll see what tomorrow brings because it isn't over yet - we're very much looking for a charge from one of those in behind."
Alone in second is Dustin Johnson and he's 7/1 with the Leeds-based firm, who make Sergio Garcia the man most likely from those six adrift and tied for third at 16/1.
Rickie Fowler is also in a share of third and can be backed at 18/1, while that group is completed by Charl Schwartzel (28/1), Louis Oosthuizen (28/1), Francesco Molinari (33/1) and Ryan Moore (35/1).
