Moore hits Las Vegas jackpot

Ryan Moore ended a three-year wait for his second title on the PGA Tour by holding off Zimbabwean Brendon de Jonge to take a one-shot victory at the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Ryan Moore: Won by a shot in Vegas

The 30-year-old Las Vegas resident scooped up the trophy and a cheque for 810,000 US dollars - equating to £502,000 - at his home city tournament, finishing on 24-under-par 260 following a closing 66.

De Jonge was a shot back after a 67, while Jonas Blixt of Sweden was third on 20-under 264, having rounded off his week with a disappointing 70.

The trio had been front-running throughout the tournament and went off together in the final group for Sunday's final round.

Ultimately De Jonge paid the price for parring all the way home after making birdie at the long 13th hole, at which point he and Moore stood level on 23 under.

Moore had a long putt for eagle at the 16th and sent it to within a foot, sinking the birdie chance to go to the top of the leaderboard on his own, which is where he stayed after making par at 17 and 18.

"It's been an unbelievable week," Moore said. "I've had such great support with my family and friends out here."

He would in Las Vegas, and it was a relief to Moore that he proved he could win again, having first tasted victory in August 2009 at the Wyndham Championship, where he beat Kevin Stadler and Jason Bohn in a play-off.

Australian Jason Day was briefly threatening to play himself into contention, completing the front nine in a record-equalling seven-under-par 28 to reach 19 under.

He could not keep up the momentum though, as the thought of breaking 60 entered his mind, and a double-bogey six at the 18th meant a 65 and dropped him into fourth place on 18 under, with American Bill Lunde fifth on 15 under after a 66.

John Daly had a dismal 86 to crash out of contention on Saturday and at least improved on that mark, but a 77 left him last among those who lasted the distance, on 11 over.

Daly made four birdies, but also five bogeys, a double on the 12th and a triple on the par-four third. He had a triple at the 12th and a quadruple bogey at the third on Saturday, so it was an improvement.
