Retief Goosen cruised to a three-stroke victory in the Scottish Open at Loch
Lomond on Sunday - just four weeks after he won the US Open.
In a £1million double, the 32-year-old South African added the £366,660 to the
£650,000 he collected in Tulsa by leading from start to finish yet again.
Five strokes clear with two holes to play, Goosen allowed himself the luxury
of two closing bogeys just as he did in his play-off with Mark Brooks at the US
Open.
He finished with a level par 71 for a 16 under par total of 268.
Dane Thomas Bjorn finished second for the second week running and Dubliner
Paul McGinley shared third spot with Berkshire's Barry Lane, Australian Adam
Scott and American John Daly.
For Daly it was his best finish since winning the Open at St Andrews in 1995.
McGinley had to be the most disappointed at the finish.
He was heading for joint second until he duffed a shot from just short of the
green at the last and bogeyed.
It cost him over £86,000 - and the equivalent number of Ryder Cup points.
It was Lane's first top three finish for six years and his performance gave
him one of 15 spots on offer for this week's Open championship.
McGinley said: "I lost my concentration on the last tee because we had to wait
so long and for the third shot it was very wet where the ball was.
"But I can't be too disappointed. I played really well and that's more cup
points and more experience for me.
"I'm disappointed about what happened at the last, but a lot of people have
done that and I'm not going to dwell on the negatives."
Third place represented Daly's best performance since he won the 1995 Open at
St Andrews and on the possibility of his challenging for another Open title next
weekend he said: "That would be awesome.
"It's been a good week and it's very exciting. I'm more consistent now and I
just need to find a way to get the ball in the hole because I can't hit it any
better. I'm starting to believe in myself again."
Lane has not had a top three finish since 1995 either and came into the
Scottish Open - the event he won back in 1988 - down in 150th spot in the Order
of Merit.
He also did not have a place in the Open, but now the 41-year-old from
Berkshire will be there after taking one of eight places offered at the
tournament.
Seven others, including Ian Woosnam, won through to Lytham off a mini-order of
merit which has been running since May.
Lane said: "My wife has been bashing me over the head recently telling me to
start enjoying my golf again and that is what I've been doing."
Goosen resumed three ahead of Scott, but the Adelaide player - 21 on Monday -
bogeyed the first and when Goosen birdied the second the gap was five.
After that the only battle was for second place. Sergio Garcia had been hoping
to get involved in that, but was fiercely critical of the state of the greens as
he managed only a 71 for six under and joint 14th place.
After missing from only two feet on the last the pre-tournament favourite
referred to how good the greens are on the US Tour where he is now based and
said: "They were so bad here.
"I hope we find some better ones at Lytham. Here I lost my confidence."
Colin Montgomerie, who was lying second after nine holes of his third round,
double-bogeyed the first and bogeyed the second.
He closed with a 74 for joint 28th, but said: "Not to worry - I'll get it
going next week."
In fact, the only player to concern Goosen was British amateur champion
Michael Hoey.
Goosen arrived at the course, looked at a leaderboard and saw that the
22-year-old from Belfast had gone to the turn in 29.
"I thought he could shoot 60 and win," he said.
But in the event Hoey had a 64 for seven under and finished in a tie for
11th.
"Seeing his score I thought I probably needed to get to 20 under to make sure
of a good win," added Goosen.
"I was surprised nobody closer to me made a run, but the greens were very
tricky."
Lehman, winner of the last Lytham Open in 1996, had eight last-day birdies,
but finished with a double-bogey six for a 68 and six under aggregate. He did
not want to stop and talk afterwards.
Greg Norman had six bogeys and a double bogey in a back nine 43 for a 78 which
matched the worst round of the day by Sandy Lyle. They are two former winners
who will not be expecting great things this week.
