Retief Goosen admitted he felt as nervous when making the winning putt on the last hole of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters as he did during his two US Open victories.

The South African won the Doha event, the second of three in the Middle East, with a thrilling birdie-eagle on the last two holes.

Australian Nick O'Hern could have been forgiven for thinking he had captured his first European Tour event when he was two shots ahead of Goosen after the 16th.

But the 38-year-old turned on the style to make a 50-foot putt on the 18th for an eagle that meant he finished 15 under, one stroke ahead of O'Hern.

"In those [US] opens I hit it well and I putted well and that has been the same this week," said Goosen.

"There is no difference really, I was probably just as nervous coming down the last here as I was when winning the opens

"It is something you are always going to have, the pressure and the nerves, and it is just how you handle it."

The victory condemned O'Hern to a seventh second-placed finish on the European Tour but Goosen paid tribute to the Australian PGA Championship winner and backed him to break his duck on the tour in the near future.

"Nick is a great player," he added. "He has been around for a while and he is shooting consistent scores all the time. I am sure it is a matter of time for him to pull it off.

"It is sort of mixed feelings in a way, you are happy but you are also sorry for the other guy. That has happened to all of us and I just said to him 'sorry and well played'.

"He played well and I just happened to make the right shot at the right time to win the tournament."

Goosen's compatriot Ernie Els produce a fine display on Sunday to storm up the leaderboard and card a five-under-par 67 to finish third at 13 under.

He made three birdies and two bogeys in his first nine holes but shot four birdies coming home, almost threatening to snatch victory.

"I was a little scrappy on the front nine again," he said. "The two birdies on seven and eight helped me out and a really good par save on nine.

"Then (on) the back nine I really played nicely. I hit a lot of fairways and a lot of greens. It was really enjoyable.

"You can't ever give up. You have always got to keep going - golf is a crazy game, as we know.

"Something crazy might happen so you always try to keep your options open and keep trying to give yourself a chance for a birdie or an eagle."
