Hennie Otto (68): "I've been working with Pete (coach Pete Cowen) on the simple things. You forget what to do. He taught me how to get back to basics and play to
your strengths."
Davis Love (69): “I feel like I’m in good shape and just excited to get off to a good start.”
Greg Norman (69): “I’m very happy with the round. I worked hard. I was very relaxed and I putted well. I could see the shots I wanted to hit. Considering this is my third golf tournament of the year, I felt comfortable and satisfied.”
Fredrik Jacobson (70): “I scrambled round the greens very well, which I felt would be one of the most important things this week. I wouldn’t mind being the first Swedish golfer to win a major. That’s what I am trying for.”
Fred Couples (71): “I hit the ball solid. I didn’t hit it great. I felt like I could have been one or two under and I finished even. If the wind dies down it’s going to be a very mediocre score, I think. But if it stayed the same, I’d be thrilled to death.”
Tom Watson (71): "That was ugly at the finish and it leaves a bad taste. But I got what I
deserved - I didn't drive the ball well."
Sandy Lyle (73): "I just hit a brick wall and couldn't make anything happen."
Tiger Woods (73): "You can shoot yourself right out of it but I tried to be as patient as
possible. There were 17 more holes to get it back and I am pleased to have hung
in there. I really grinded myself around."
Darren Clarke (75): "I've been struggling all week and it certainly didn't get any better. I hardly hit a good shot. I was just terrible."
Padraig Harrington (75): "If I was in the form of my life I would think I could come back from here,
but I feel I am playing only average and three average days won't bring me back.
Ernie Els (78: "If I want to get back into the tournament I have to do something special,"
he added. Hopefully we can get a break on Friday morning. I have a lot of work to do,
but if it stays like this, even par could win this tournament."
Justin Rose (79): "I tried to hang in there and finished birdie, par, par - but at that
stage it's damage limitation. I have a mountain to climb, but I'm off at 8:20am on Friday and I have to
hope it's a bit calmer."
Colin Montgomerie (retired): "I tripped over a step and fell nastily. I just hope it's not broken. I knew it was bad right away and after hitting only about five shots on the practice range I was about to say forget it. I couldn't hit it properly at all. My coach wanted me to pull out, but because it's the Open and because of my
competitive nature I wanted to give it a go."
