| THE OPEN PROFILE |
 |
| The world number one responded to continued media rumblings about him being in a slump the only way he knows how - romping to victory at the Western Open. Ten shots clear at one stage, he eventually won by five as Woods thumbed his nose to those that thought the magic had deserted him. Barring his win in this event in 2000 when at the very height of his powers, Woods' record is patchy by his standards and it is fair to say that this is the one major that can cause him most problems. He was blown right off course in the third round at Muirfield 12 months ago when staggering to an 81 but bounced backed 24 hours later with a sparkling 65. There is no doubt that he is the man to beat but prevailing weather conditions may well be the deciding factor if he is to claim a ninth major title. Woods plays with great patience, rarely makes poor decisions (this year's Masters excepted) and is the complete package when all cylinders are firing. |
