| THE OPEN PROFILE |
 |
| Weir was unhappy with his season in 2002 but he can do little wrong this year. He won twice in February and then made the big breakthrough by claiming his first Major, the Masters at Augusta in April. His play-off defeat of Len Mattiace was far from unexpected as he had been on the brink of taking that step into the Major league for some time. He took a few weeks off afterwards but the magic touch has not deserted him and superb finishes in his last three starts, inclding at the US Open, have hoisted him up to third best in the world. The Canadian is an uncomplicated player who finds a way to get the job done. He putts beautifully and his wins at the Masters and Riviera in extra time suggest he has plenty of bottle when the chips are down. Not the most flamboyant, Weir makes few mental errors and he invariably is ready to pounce if others slip up. His past Open form is poor and a vastly improved effort is anticipated if that current form continues. |
