| For a player of Colin Montgomerie's calibre, his Open Championship record is surprisingly moderate. He clearly felt the burden of expectation during the mid-90s when he was at his peak - Montgomerie always looked Britain's best chance of winning the title but year after year ended in disappointment and frustration. The intense pressure he was under then seems to have waned a little so it might be now, somewhat out of the blue, that his turn in this company might have arrived. That said, he is not quite the player of five or six years ago and his tied 50th at last week's Scottish Open let down his recent form. But he still would have much to offer if performing to the best of his ability. |
