THE OPEN PROFILE
The Big Easy defends the crown he took 12 months ago after a dramatic final day that culminated in him coming out on top after a four-man play-off. It meant that Els finally stepped out of the shadow of Tiger Woods after waiting for five years to add to the two US Open titles already on his CV. He is arguably in even better shape this year with an equipment change at the start of the season which has already yielded four victories worldwide thanks to a blistering opening in 2003 and an easy triumph in last week's Scottish Open. He is over a wrist injury that was hampering him during May and he must have high hopes of lifting the Claret Jug once again as he boasts a recent record in this event that is second to none.
