| THE OPEN PROFILE |
 |
| Clarke has already shown he can beat the very best by sinking Tiger Woods in the final of the 2000 World Match Play. A second place in the 1997 British Open is Clarke's closest brush with a major but he has the talent to challenge in every one he competes in. He led this year's Masters after the first round before it all went wrong and continues to play far better than his scoring reflects. But the patience is running out though he found only Ernie Els too good for him at last week's Scottish Open. If putting it all together (especially his putting), his chance would be obvious but his frustrations getting the better of him will be cruelly exposed. |
