Tiger Woods and Greg Norman got away with a breach of European Tour
regulations when they both wore collarless shirts for their third rounds of the
Open at Royal St George's.
Rule 20 of the Tour's regulations covers "Standard of Dress" and states:
"Collarless, sleeveless, shirts of a transparent material/design or shirts worn
outside trousers are NOT acceptable."
The pair could have been fined £250 for breaching the rules, but they escaped
without punishment.
Woods was dressed in a black, short-sleeved Nike top with a round neck, while
Norman was wearing one of his own label shirts, also without a collar.
Although the Open is part of the European Tour schedule, it seems that the
rules on dress were relaxed, and a spokesman said: "The players must be
suitably dressed, but that rule does not apply here."
Woods and Norman were not the first players in Tour history to flout the
rules.
Sergio Garcia got into trouble with officials at the Greg Norman International
in Australia two years ago, and was asked to wear a shirt with a collar.
That was the same week the Spaniard was penalised two shots for taking an
illegal drop, prompting him to lash out verbally and with a sand wedge -
outbursts for which he was subsequently fined.
A more recent example came only last month when Greg Owen wore a collarless
shirt at the French Open, although nothing was said at the time.
