Davis Love III is in to just 6/1 with Blue Square to win the Open after his two-under-par opening round was enough to leave him one shot off the lead.
The pacesetter at this stage is little-known South African Hennie Otto, who benefited from his early tee-off time.
Weather conditions deteriorated during the day, so pre-tournament favourite Tiger Woods remains the 7/2 jolly despite carding a two-over par 73 to sit five shots off the lead after a disastrous opening hole which he triple-bogeyed.
Players drawn for late tee-off times found the conditions increasingly blustery and defending champion Ernie Els endured a round of 78, leaving him seven over par.
On a day where only five players broke par, the contest remains wide open.
The third favourite after the opening day is 20/1 shot Frederik Jacobsen, who lies two shots behind Otto, himself a 66/1 chance.
Veteran Greg Norman is as short as 40/1 after his 69, while the only other player to score under 71, SK Ho, is a best price of 100/1 with Skybet.
All the big names are still in contention despite many dropping several shots.
Jim Furyk and Mike Weir are both 33/1 after firing three-over-par, while Sergio Garcia is the same price and lies one shot ahead.
Padraig Harrington (+4) and Retief Goosen (+2) come next in the betting at 40/1, while Els is as long as 50/1 after his forgettable round.
