Duffy Waldorf (67): "It was more American golf than links golf out there. When I missed a few irons shots I was missing them in the
middle of the greens."
David Toms (67): "When they were interviewing me they said I was tied for the lead or leading
or whatever. I still haven't looked."
Justin Rose (68): "I know I have the game to win if all
goes well. A lot of guys have - it's just producing it."
Sandy Lyle (68): "It feels really nice to be hitting the ball well and a strong finish like
that really helps the momentum."
Des Smyth (68): "I just love playing the Open and
maybe I am not as afraid as I might have been in years gone by."
Ian Poulter (69): "It's a very nice start. I am very pleased to shoot a two under but I am amazed that the scoring is not lower."
Padraig Harrington (69): "I played very conservative all the way through the front nine and more or less the back nine. I went out, as with any major in the first round, just trying to stay in there and not make too many mistakes. I am satisfied but I have to take my shots on a little bit more the next three days."
Mark O'Meara (69): "I'm 45 years of age and to come here which to me is the greatest championship in the world and to get off to a good start like this, especially to clip my roommate (Tiger Woods) by a shot I feel pretty good about it."
Tiger Woods (70): "But I'm very happy with that round. I thought I played great and anything
under par is good."
Ernie Els (70): "I wouldn't say I have played very well but I hung in there and got a one-under par under my belt. I feel a lot happier with my swing. I hit almost every fairway today and even though it was benign out there, I kept it in play. I am pretty pleased.”
Paul Lawrie (70): "I played a lot better than I scored. I played very, very well but missed a few chances. The conditions are fantastic and if you are going to go low, today was the day but no-one is going to do that as the course is so tough."
Brad Faxon (70): "Conditions were perfect today. It's definitely there for the taking. I was striking the ball very well today."
Sergio Garcia (71): "On the front nine I hit a couple of really bad shots and paid for it big time. But I kept going and hit the ball much better on the back nine. I'm quite happy."
Steve Elkington (71): "A 71 is not a bad stepping-stone and I can build on that. I played pretty well but not great. Conditions were excellent, The course is not playing that hard. All the long holes are playing downwind."
Anders Hansen (71): "I got off to a bad start, doubled the first hole and followed that up with a bogey four. Level par is all right. I'm pretty happy. The swing is still a bit shaky but it's getting better."
David Duval (72): "I'm not upset or mad. I feel like I could have had a better score. I feel
like that a lot though, I've felt that way for a long time."
Ian Woosnam (72): "I was playing very conservatively and couldn't get into it. I was very negative today and I don't know why."
Lee Westwood (72): "I am
certainly not playing as well as I did do in 1999 and 2000 but if I keep working
on the things I am working on I believe it will come good eventually."
Colin Montgomerie (74): "I'll try to come back, but
it is very difficult. I am not swinging the club even the way I did at Loch
Lomond, so I don't know what goes wrong."
John Cook (74): "I hit it into some spots where you can't go. I just got sloppy. The course doesn't give you much. The opportunities you have, you must take."
