There's few in the field more deserving of an Open title than the enigmatic Swede. The first of Parnevik's near misses came in 1994 at Turnberry when, after refusing to check the leaderboard, he bogeyed the 17th after thinking he needed a birdie and allowed Nick Price to sprint past him. He was again runner-up at Troon in 1997 when losing out to the fast-finishing Justin Leonard, while four years ago he was fourth at Royal Birkdale. Last year at Lytham he was always in contention before fading out on the final day to finish ninth. Parnevik has had a disappointing season in America with a second place at the BellSouth Classic he's only notable finish. Heads to Muirfield having finished in the top 20 in just one of his last six starts. However, he has a better Open record than most of the world's top 10 and given his liking for the unorthodox it would be no surprise to see him go well.
