Furyk made his Open debut at Lytham six years ago and finished a respectable tied 44th. But at Troon 12 months later he finished fourth and then at Birkdale in 1999 he was fourth again, hinting that his first Major title could come this side of the Atlantic. A 10th place at Carnoustie in 2000 highlighted his love for this tournament with his weird swing seeming to hold up well in windy conditions. Furyk, completely out of character, missed four cuts in six starts across March, April and May although an ear infection which caused dizzy spells was partly to blame. But anyone writing him off was put in their place when he produced a final round charge to capture the Memorial back in May. He followed that up with a top ten in the Buick Classic and it would no surprise to see him at the top end of the leaderboard this week.
