BRITISH OPEN PROFILE
The big South African with the syruppy swing finished second in the first three majors of 2000 so is still trying to add to the US Open titles he captured in 1994 and 1997. He also finished runner-up to Tom Lehman at Lytham six years ago when a late charge finally lost momentum over the closing holes. With two second places and five other top 11s (including fifth at Muirfield in 1992) in his ten appearances he boasts one of the best modern-day Open records so he should be up there again. This season has seen Els return to the peak of his game with two wins on the European Tour in the Heineken Classic and Dubai Desert Classic. He has also tasted victory on the US Tour claiming the Genuity Championship. In his last start in America he finished 10th at the Greater Hartford Open, but was disappointing in last week's Scottish Open at Loch Lomond coming home tied 50th. However, he is one of the leading contenders this week and must have a great chance.
