Toms took his place among the golfing elite by winning the USPGA Championship at Atlanta Country Club last year. To followers of the man from Louisiana it didn't come as a shock. The 35-year-old has been one of the most improved players in the game over the last three years, notching up seven US Tour wins. One of the keys has been Toms' ability to hold onto leads when hitting the front and he did just that in his USPGA triumph last year when holding off world number two Phil Mickelson down the stretch. Although he hasn't added another win since then he's been knocking at the door this season with runners-up finishes at the Mercedes and Colonial. Toms has only ever featured in two previous Open Championships, missing the cut last year but coming an impressive fourth on his debut at St Andrews. Currently fourth in the US Money list, it would be no surprise to see Toms continue the recent trend of an American leaving with the claret jug under his arm.
