Clarke is most recognised for being the conqueror of Tiger Woods in the World Match Play championship final last year. In fact last year really saw Clarke confirm himself as one of the world's leading players, with the Ulsterman narrowly pipped by stablemate Westwood for the 2000 European Order of Merit crown. His recent win in the Smurfit European Open was his first title of the year on the European Tour, and it couldn't have come at a better time as he prepares for another crack at the Open title.
Clarke finished tied 11th in the Open at Lytham back in 1996 and led by four after 45 holes at Troon in 1997. Last year at St Andrews he finished in seventh place and with his recent form suggesting his game is back to its best, another good showing can be expected.
