In just three years on Tour Weir has proved he has an extra touch of class. In 1999 he was the third round leader in the USPGA but, partnering Tiger, shot an 80 and slipped to tenth. But he learned from that blowout and came to attention with two exceptional performances at the back end of last season. Firstly, he played superbly well to beat a world-class field at the World Golf Championship-American Express Championship at Valderrama. And he followed that up by finishing as the International's top points scorer in the President's Cup. Weir has twice been a runner-up on the US Tour this season and last time out finished third at the Western Open after closing with a pair of 67s. He believes the US and British Opens are the majors best suited to his game so after a tied 27th at the Masters and a tied 19th at the US Open he could be ready to step it up further at Lytham.
