This is Love's 14th visit to the Open and he still hasn't matched his late father's sixth place at Lytham in
1969. He's been close in the last four years though with finishes of 11-7-7-10 so he's starting to master the challenge of links golf. Surprisingly for a player of his immense talent his only major victory came at the 1997 USPGA when he was a brilliant winner at Winged Foot. Near misses include two second places at the US Masters and a runners-up spot in the 1996 US Open. Had two months out injured recently with a neck disk problem but since returning has tied seventh in the US Open and shot 20-under-par when second to Scott Hoch in the Western Open on his last start. Fresh after his enforced lay-off, he could be a genuine contender.
