WOOSIE JOINS A CALAMITOUS LIST
By Mark Garrod, PA Sport Golf Correspondent
Ian Woosnam's Open blunder - or rather his caddie's - joins a list of
calamities in major history.
Others include:
1999 Open - Jean Van de Velde led by three on last tee, but second shot hit
spectator area and bounced back over the Barry Burn into the rough. He then
chipped into the burn, took a penalty drop went into bunker, took a triple bogey
and lost a play-off.
1996 Masters - Greg Norman led by six, shot 78 and lost by five to Nick
Faldo.
1994 Open - Jesper Parnevik three ahead on the last tee, but did not know it.
He went for a birdie and bogeyed while Nick Price birdied the 16th, eagled the
17th and parred the last to win.
1989 Masters - Scott Hoch faced a two-foot putt to beat Nick Faldo at the
first play-off hole, but missed it and lost at the next.
1985 US Open - Taiwan's TC Chen four clear, but took eight at the fifth
including a double hit with a chip and lost by one to Andy North.
1983 Open - Hale Irwin lost by one to Tom Watson, having had an air shot over
a three-inch putt at the 14th hole in the third round. He went to tap it in, but
caught the ground and the putter went over the ball.
1968 Masters - Roberto de Vicenzo tied with Bob Goalby, but then signed for a
par at the 17th instead of the birdie three he had taken and had to accept the
higher score. "What a silly man I am," he said.
