THE OPEN QUOTES

Tiger Woods (67): "The tournament is not over yet - if it was I'd be sitting here with the trophy.

"I need to execute one shot at a time and stick to my game plan. But I played well today. There were some tough pin placings, but when I had the opportunity to make birdies I tried."

"It's possible I can lose. I would have to fail to execute the shots I want to and they (whoever plays best of the chasing pack) would have to play a wonderful round.

"Any time you have a lead you are going to feel pressure and the bigger the lead the more pressure there is because you know you are not going to feel good if you don't win."

David Duval (66): "It will be a circus, exciting, a slugfest, whatever you want to call it. But to be in the last group in the oldest championship in golf with the player who is undoubtedly the best in the world is a situation you definitely want.

"I am going to be trying to win my first Major, he is going to try to complete the Slam, so there is going to be pressure on both parties. I definitely wanted to be in the last group. I can show him I have a little game going too."

Thomas Bjorn (68): "Are we playing for second? Definitely, and second is the first guy that loses. I certainly think someone out there is playing on a different planet than the rest of us.

"I'm quite happy with my round and if you shoot three rounds under 70 at St Andrews you're not doing too bad but unfortunately for the rest of us Tiger is in a different class.

"There's a chance you can catch him if he makes mistakes. Out here you make a mistake you can take double or triple bogey. But he is not making mistakes."

Darren Clarke (68): "He's (Tiger Woods) playing fantastic and it's going to be very difficult to catch him but he's not invincible. Invariably his name is up at the top and he's is playing as well as I've seen him but he doesn't win every week.

"This golf course can throw up some surprises so you never know what's going to happen. If you get a bad bounce into the bunker and get a lie that is unplayable then that could change things.

"You could be forced to go back to the tee and guys can make birdies while another drops one or two shots. Then there is a couple of shots swing. The wind could also pick up, which would suit me because I'm used to those conditions but I would still have to play well."

Sergio Garcia (73): "I think that was one of the unluckiest days I have had in my life. I was in divots on the third, fourth and ninth and the one on the ninth was about three inches deep.

(After slamming his club into the turf in anger after finding his ball on the ninth fairway in a deep divot) "I did wrong but the guy who was there did wrong in the way he repaired the divot. I had to hit a chip with an eight iron instead of an ordinary wedge and suddenly you go from a good birdie chance to trying to save par.

"It's very frustrating but sometimes you are going to do things you don't want to."

Nick Faldo (75): "It all depends on pin positions but he (Tiger Woods) is going to cruise past my 18 under (St Andrews record) sometime tomorrow afternoon.

"I wanted to keep that. I managed to get a new record with the most rounds under par and with Jack (Nicklaus) retiring I've a good chance of some more. It's nice to keep some of those records but they aren't going to last long with Tiger. He's just going to go and blitz them all."

Colin Montgomerie (72): (After a string of missed putts) "I don't know what it is. I just have to work it out because it's not good enough I'm afraid.

"If you don't see a way out you'd give it up, but I am not giving this game up."

Bernhard Langer (66): "I'm very pleased with that apart from the last couple of putts that didn't go in. The conditions were perfect and the whole week has been really calm.

"This is the championship I would love to win. I realise I'm getting on in age (he is 43 next month) and it's getting a bit harder but I have not given up hope."

Dean Robertson (66): "It's just been a grind this week and it's been hard battling out this score. I've pulled out of next week's tournament because an MOT is required I'm afraid."

Tom Watson (72): "I played some stupid shots and that's disappointing."
