1st, 376 yards, par 4 (Burn): The widest fairway in golf, shared with the
18th, has Granny Clark's Wynd, a tarmac road, running across. Despite the width,
famous players have gone out of bounds on both sides - Ian Baker-Finch left in
1995, Dick Burton right with the first shot of his title defence after the war
in 1946. The name comes from the Swilken Burn, which can catch drives hit too
far left or right and loops round to guard the green.
