FORMULA ONE RACE RULES

RULES FOR 2006

ENGINE

* Reduced capacity for 2006, introducing 2.4-litre V8 engines to replace the three-litre V10 units.

* All but one team forced to use the V8s, with Scuderia Toro Rosso allowed to use old engines with a rev limit to reduce their speed.

* Engines must again last two whole race weekends, with 10-place grid penalty imposed for premature changes.

TYRES

* Tyre changes return for 2006, ending the one-season ban on changing rubber in pit stops.

* Last season of Formula One's tyre war, with Michelin withdrawing prior to 2007 to leave Bridgestone as sole supplier.

QUALIFYING

* One-lap qualifying ditched in favour of a new three-part system.

* All cars on track - with low fuel - for first 15 minutes, with the six slowest eliminated, setting in stone the last quarter of the grid.

* Remaining 16 cars on track - with low fuel - for next 15 minutes. Six slowest again eliminated, leaving front of the grid to be decided.

* Last 10 cars enter a 20-minute shoot-out to decide the front of the grid, with the fuel load they plan to start the race with. Cars can refuel afterwards - but only with the amount of fuel used in the final qualifying session. Tyre changes during the session are allowed.
