Raikkonen wants winning feeling

Kimi Raikkonen has revealed his desperation to clamber back on to the top step of the Formula One podium.

Kimi Raikkonen: Desperate for race win

On his return to the sport after two years competing in rallying, the 2007 world champion has twice come close this year, finishing runner-up in Bahrain and again in Valencia in Sunday, whilst he was also third in Spain.

For Lotus, they readily admit the haul of podiums from Raikkonen and team-mate Romain Grosjean is more than they anticipated at the start of the year.

But in an unpredictable campaign in which there have been seven different winners, the fact neither Raikkonen nor Grosjean has yet taken to the chequered flag is slowly starting to irk.

For Raikkonen, in particular, whose last win was in Belgium in 2009, the Finn is eager to take the chequered flag again.

"If you asked me before the start of the season whether I would be happy with podiums, I would have said 'yes', but now I've had some good results, I want more," said Raikkonen.

"In the last few races the results haven't been as strong as I've wanted. We've finished well, but I'm disappointed not to have a win yet.

"We just have to get everything together and I'm sure it can come."

Whether that will be at one of his favourite tracks next weekend, Silverstone for the British Grand Prix, remains to be seen.

The Lotus cars have proved they perform strongly in the heat, as was the case in Bahrain and Valencia especially.

The cooler climes of Silverstone may be different, but Raikkonen is looking forward to returning to the Northamptonshire venue, even though the layout has changed since he last competed.

Raikkonen added: "It's always such a good feeling going to Silverstone. It's a great place to race.

"I have a long history there. It was the real base for the start of my international racing career in Formula Renault in 1999 and 2000.

"Since then I've always enjoyed racing at Silverstone. I don't know why, there must be this nostalgic feeling that I have every time we go there.

"Somehow it has been a good circuit for me since the beginning. It will be interesting to see how the new section changes a lap, but I'm sure I'll learn it very quickly."

In its former guise Raikkonen stepped on to the podium on five successive occasions from 2003 to 2007, with the latter finally a victory.

Raikkonen would naturally love to emulate that feat, adding: "When you win at Silverstone it gives you such a good feeling.

"You have to get everything exactly right. I won there in Formula Renault and then with Ferrari in 2007.

"It would be fantastic to win there again, especially with the factory (at Enstone) just down the road. I'm sure we would have some fantastic celebrations."
