  • That was breathtaking stuff from Malaysia, especially from Alonso and Perez. We hope you've enjoyed our coverage. Join us again in two weeks' time for the Chinese GP.

    56
  • Alonso is told this is 'one of the most beautiful drives'. 'Yes, yes' is the shout from Sergio Perez as he becomes the first Mexican to make it onto the Formula One podium.

    56
  • Webber is P4, Raikkonen P5, Senna P6, Di Resta P7, Vergne P8, Hulkenberg P9, Schumacher P10. Vettel was able to continue and he finishes P11.

    56
  • Alonso makes his way to the final corner to claim victory in the Malaysian Grand Prix. It really was a great drive from the Ferrari driver, but Sergio Perez is surely the driver of the day as he crosses the line second. Hamilton is P3.

    56
  • Perez has managed to reduce the gap to Alonso to 2.7s. Vettel has been told to retire the car. Not sure what the problem is.

    Lap 55
  • Maldonado's engine problem means Michael Schumacher will sneak into the points. Schumacher's team-mate Rosberg is down in P15.

    Lap 55
  • Some smoke coming from Maldonado's Williams. He won't make it to the end of the race.

    Lap 55
  • Alonso is now all set for the race win with Perez cruising in P2. They are followed by Hamilton, Webber, Raikkkonen, Senna, Di Resta, Vergne, Hulkenberg and Maldonado.

    Lap 54
  • World Champion Sebastian Vettel is out of the points in P12 after his puncture. That also means that Maldonado moves up to P10.

    Lap 53
  • Perez is lucky. He ran wide, but didn't go into the gravel and managed to get back onto the track. Looks like he will finish P2.

    Lap 52
  • Perez is in trouble at Turn 14. The car is still running but Alonso has some clear air.

    Lap 52
  • Perez has been told that Alonso is on the medium tyres while his Sauber is on the medium tyres.

    Lap 51
  • Perez's team-mate Kobayashi has retired. Back to the front and Perez is starting to have a look. The DRS zone is approaching fast. He's too far and Alonso holds onto P1 for now.

    Lap 50
  • Right, here we go! The gap between Alonso and Perez is less than a second. There is still debris on the track from the Vettel incident, but they clear it. Game on!

    Lap 50
  • Hamilton can breathe easy again as Vettel has a puncture. There are debris flying all over the place from that tyre and he makes his way to the pits. He made contact with an HRT.

    Lap 49
  • Hamilton is 12.6s behind Perez and Vettel is starting to catch him. The Red Bull driver has closed the gap to 2.8.

    Lap 49
  • Button is still struggling in P16, but he is closing in on Rosberg. The German's Mercedes team-mate Michael Schumacher is P12.

    Lap 48
  • The gap between Alonso and Perez is now just 3.9. Senna, meanwhile, is catching the Lotus of Raikkonen in P6.

    Lap 47
  • Senna continues to make his way up the pack and overtakes Paul di Resta to claim P7. The rain is getting heavier.

    Lap 46
  • Alonso is 5.7s ahead of Perez, but the Sauber driver is lapping quicker.

    Lap 46
  • Webber is the fastest man on the track with a 1:43.724. His Red Bull team-mate Vettel is also lapping in the 1:43s.

    Lap 45
  • The top 10 positions are as follow after the latest round of stops: Alonso, Perez, Hamilton, Vettel, Webber, Raikkkonen, Di Resta, Senna, Vergne, Hulkenberg.

    Lap 44
  • Tidy pit stop as he switches to the harder tyres, but Alonso is ahead. Hamilton has also pitted and he remains in P3. It was another slow stop from Hamilton.

    Lap 43
  • Perez finally pits from the front. Will he come out ahead of Alonso?

    Lap 43
  • Perez and Hamilton are the only two drivers from the frontrunners to remain on the inters. Vettel is also into the pits, but he switches to hard tyres. Ricciardo posts a 1:49.800 on his wet tyres.

    Lap 42
  • Di Resta, Senna, Schumacher and Maldonado have all pitted. Looks like Button is next in the pit lane. Yep, he will also switch. Alonso ducks into the pits, but Perez stays out. Massive, massive gamble from Sauber.

    Lap 42
  • Massa and Webber have also switched to slicks. Ricciardo's name continues to go purple in the first and second sectors on his fresh set of slicks.

    Lap 42
  • Maybe it wasn't such a big gamble from Toro Rosso as Ricciardo posts the quickest middle second time. Ferrari are ready for Alonso. The top two remain on the track though.

    Lap 41
  • Button has been told he needs to get to the end of the race with his current set of tyres. The gap at the top is 2.3. It will be Alonso v Perez for P1 in a moment.

    Lap 40
  • Vettel is not making much of an impression on Hamilton in P3. Ricciardo makes his way into the pits and they have a set of slicks ready for the Australian. A gamble from the Toro Rosso pit crew as it's not raining that hard.

    Lap 40
  • Alonso can now see Perez in his mirrors as the gap is less than four seconds. The Sauber driver is pumping out fastest lap after fastest lap. This is a very special drive from the Mexican.

    Lap 39
  • Webber has been told that the race is 'close'. It's 'coming slowly'. Massa is struggling at Turn 2 and Ricciardo has gone ahead of him in the DRS zone.

    Lap 38
  • At the front of the grid, Perez is now lapping in the 1:55s and he has reduced the gap to Alonso to 4.9. The gap to Hamilton is now 10.2. Is it a race between Perez and Alonso for the victory?

    Lap 37
  • Button has a couple of goes at the Ferrari driver, but Massa manages to close the door on both occasions. Will it be third time lucky as he goes on the outside? No, Massa holds firm. Ricciardo has now joined the party. Button finally gets the job done at Turn 1. Ricciardo goes wide and he has to start over.

    Lap 36
  • Button is still down in P17, but he has Felipe Massa in his sights. He will surely get ahead when they hit the DRS zone. The Caterham of Vitaly Petrov is also not too far ahead in P15.

    Lap 35
  • Webber is still less than a second behind Raikkkonen, but he just cannot get close enough to make a move.

    Lap 35
  • Perez has managed to get the gap to Alonso to below seven seconds. Kobayashi, who is still P11, has been told that more rain is on the way.

    Lap 34
  • Sauber are having the race of their lives at the moment as Kobayshi outdoes his team-mate with a 1:57.450.

    Lap 33
  • Hamilton sets a new fastest middle-second time, but Perez is the man whose name goes purple as he posts a 1:57.647 - a new fastest time.

    Lap 32
  • The Red Bull pit wall tells Webber, who is less than one second behind Raikkonen in P5, that there could be some showers on the horizon over the next few minutes.

    Lap 31
  • Kobayashi sets the fastest first-second time and he moves right onto the rear of Schumacher. He goes on the outside and takes P11. His team-mate Perez is still comfortable in P2.

    Lap 31
  • There is plenty of breathing space between the top three. Vettel is 8.3s behind Hamilton in third. Senna continues to move up the pack and he goes past Hulkenberg to claim P9.

    Lap 30
  • Looks like Alonso's tyres are starting to go as he is lapping 2:00 while Perez and Hamilton are doing 1:59. On second thought, maybe he was making his way through the backmarkers.

    Lap 30
  • While Alonso is easing ahead in front, Massa is going backwards as he now has to defend from Senna. The Ferrari driver ducks into the pits for a fresh set of intermediate tyres.

    Lap 29
  • Button is making a move at the back of the grid and posts a new fastest lap of 1:58.329. That is more than two seconds quicker than Alonso and Perez's fastest times.

    Lap 28
  • Massa locks up at Turn 9 and he makes contact with Paul di Resta. Not too much damage and they are both able to continue. Di Resta takes P8 and the Ferrari driver has to pull out all the stops to hold off Vergne. The Toro Rosso driver is staying close and it won't be too long before they hit the DRS zone. There you go, it was always going to happen. Vergne is up to P9.

    Lap 27
  • Perez posts a new fastest lap, a 2:00.139, but the gap to Alonso is still six seconds. In the middle of the pack, Senna has moved to P12 after passing Schumacher. Looks like the Mercs have qualifying pace, but not race pace.

    Lap 27
  • Button pits again and he puts on another set of intermediate tyres. Rosberg is now P7 after Webber also passes him with ease. That Mercedes is going back at an alarming rate.

    Lap 26
  • Alonso reports that there is rain at Turn 4. Button is still stuck in P19, but he is right on the tail of Timo Glock in the Marussia.

    Lap 25
  • Alonso is now pumping in fastest lap after fastest lap. You have to feel for Rosberg as he goes from P4 to P6 in the space of two laps. Raikkonen also uses DRS to pass the Mercedes man on the outside. The Lotus driver is up to P5. Webber now has Rosberg in his sights.

    Lap 25
  • Perez was closing the gap on Alonso, but the Ferrari driver hits back with a 2:00.921 - the fastest lap. Vettel you beauty! He deploys his rear wing and goes on the outside of Rosberg to take P4.

    Lap 24
  • Button is struggling and he has not been able to get closer to Maldonado in P19. He tells his pit wall that he is struggling for grip.

    Lap 23
  • The battle between Rosberg, Vettel and Raikkonen is the closets on the track at the moment. The Mercedes driver is holding firm in P4 at the moment. Ricciardo, meanwhile, continues his climb up the grid as he moves ahead of Kobayashi in P14.

    Lap 23
  • Raikkonen is just 0.7s behind Vettel. With DRS now enabled, the reigning World Champion could be a sitting duck.

    Lap 22
  • DRS has finally been enabled. Alonso has opened up a 4.3s gap over Perez. The Mexican, meanwhile, is 5.8s ahead of Hamilton. The McLarens continue to struggle in the middle sector.

    Lap 21
  • Take a bow Ricciardo as he goes past Senna on the outside to move to P14. Spare a thought for Karthikeyan who has dropped to dropped to P22 after his run-in with Button.

    Lap 21
  • The McLaren of Hamilton is very slow in the middle sector and he is losing time to the front two.

    Lap 20
  • Alonso and Perez continue to lap in the 2:02 while Hamilton and the rest are posting times of 2:03+. Jenson Button is down in P20, but he has just set a new fastest lap with a 2:00.936.

    Lap 19
  • Alonso sets the fastest lap, a 2:01.920, as he starts to open a 2.4s gap over the Sauber driver. Hamilton is third and Rosberg fourth. Vettel is P5 and Raikkonen is in sixth place.

    Lap 18
  • Alonso has managed to get past Perez and Ferrari are leading the Malaysian Grand Prix. Yes folks, that is correct, Ferrari are leading the race with Sergio Perez in P2. What is happening here?

    Lap 18
  • Perez has pitted and rejoins the race ahead of Alonso. That means he is P1. Alonso has go at the Sauber driver, but the Mexican stands firm. Button is in the pits and he will lose plenty of time.

    Lap 17
  • Button has lost his right front wing after he makes contact with the HRT of Karthikeyan. He has to pit for a new front wing.

    Lap 17
  • Button has managed to sneak ahead of his team-mate during the pit stop. Alonso also came out ahead of Hamilton following his slow pit stop. Looks like Hamilton's car was dropped late and then he had to wait for Massa to come past him.

    Lap 16
  • Hamilton ducks into the pits, which means Sergio Perez is leading the race. Alonso, Vettel and Massa also pits. Hamilton had a problem in the pits and he's slow in coming out.

    Lap 15
  • Alonso has managed to get ahead of Webber. The two Red Bull drivers are P4 and P5 respectively. Webber initially lost his place to Vettel, but the Australian fought back.

    Lap 15
  • Several cars, including Button and Rosberg, have ducked into the pits. That means Perez is up to P2. Massa gets past Vergne in P7.

    Lap 15
  • Away we go again in Malaysia. Hamilton backed up the pack and then spins away. Button gets left behind, but he manages to just hold off Perez. Webber, meanwhile has to hold off Alonso.

    Lap 14
  • Pedro de la Rosa has received a drive-through penalty for having personnel on the grid after the cut-off time.

    Lap 14
  • Rosberg has told his pit wall that he wants to go to inters as soon as the race restarts. There will be a very long queue in the pitlane. The Safety Car will be in this lap.

    Lap 13
  • Hamilton has started to back up the pack. Looks like he feels the Safety Car will go back in soon.

    Lap 13
  • Conditions look good for the race to restart, but no word yet from race control. Several mechanics are already out in the pitlane and getting ready to switch from full wets to intermediates once we get underway.

    Lap 13
  • Jenson Button has been told that the rain should clear for the rest of the race. He has also been told to put some heat in his rear brakes. In other news, Pedro de la Rosa is being investigated by the stewards for having team personnel on the grid. That happened at the start of the race.

    Lap 12
  • It is raining once again, but don't panic it's not too hard. They will continue behind the Safety Car for now.

    Lap 11
  • After a 50-minute rain delay, away they go again behind the Safety Car. Hamilton leads them around with Button and Perez following closely. Webber, Alonso and Vettel are next.

    Lap 10
  • We are almost good to go again at the Sepang circuit as all of the drivers are back in their cars. The mechanics have also started to wipe some of the cars dry.

    17:10
  • We have an official update from race director Charlie Whiting. The race will resume at 17:15 local time behind the Safety Car - wet tyres must be fitted to all cars. There you have it. Go make a quick cup of coffee.

    17:00
  • The medical car has returned to the pits and we all wait with bated breath their report on conditions. It is definitely a lot brighter around the track, but it's still drizzling.

    17:00
  • The sun is starting to set, but it is still a couple of hours before it will get dark. The medical car has made its way around the track. Probably just having a look at the track.

    16:55
  • The rain has eased up a bit, but the track remains very wet. Vettel and Alonso are having a nice chat.

    16:50
  • It is unlikely to happen, but if the race doesn't resume, then HRT will get their first points with Narain Karthikeyan in P10... well, it will be half a point as the drivers haven't competed 75 per cent of the race yet. Other firsts will be Sergio Perez on the podium and Jean-Eric Vergne, in P7, also getting his first points.

    16:45
  • A lot of the drivers, including Massa and Rosberg, have decided to remain in their cars. Kovalainen, though, is walking around the track with his umbrella man right by his side. He's off to the team garage.

    16:40
  • Still bucketing down. Button has decided to get out of his car while Ferrari have brought out two gazebos for their drivers. Newey, meanwhile, is once again having a very close inspection at some of the cars on the track.

    16:35
  • Vergne, by the way, stayed out on intermediates the whole time and he is in P7. That is some drive from the rookie as the conditions were pretty bad.

    16:30
  • The drivers are all back on the grid and the mechanics come rushing over to their cars. Let me just get this out now. Someone give Kimi Raikkonen an ice cream before he gets out of his car. The famous ice cream incident happened during the 2009 Malaysian GP.

    16:25
  • The RED FLAG is out and the race has been suspended. The drivers slowly make their way back to the grid.

    Lap 10
  • Hamilton has been told that this weather could last for another 30 minutes. Let's hope that is not the case as a race behind the Safety Car is not much fun.

    Lap 10
  • It's still pouring at the Sepang circuit and the Safety Car is still cruising around the track. Bruno Senna has made a second visit to the pits.

    Lap 9
  • No, you didn't read wrong when you saw Vergne in P7 and Karthikeyan in P10. They haven't stopped yet. Looks like they may have started on full wets.

    Lap 8
  • Vettel and Rosberg both went off the track just after they came out of the pits and lost track position to Alonso and Massa respectively.

    Lap 8
  • Here's an update for you on the positions: Hamilton, Button, Perez, Webber, Alonso, Vettel, Vergne, Massa, Rosberg and Karthikeyan.

    Lap 8
  • The Safety car has been deployed. Button tells his team parts of the track is "like a lake".

    Lap 7
  • It's the two McLaren drivers and they are followed by Sergio Perez. The Sauber driver was the first to stop for wets and it has paid huge dividends for him. I spoke too soon as he goes off the track. No damage though and he returns to the track in P3.

    Lap 7
  • Hamilton tells his team he is coming in for full wets. Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel are also in. The two Merc drivers are also in. Will Hamilton come out in front of Button? Hamilton just about manages to stay ahead of his team. The rain is pretty hard now.

    Lap 7
  • Button comes out in front of Schumacher who is P10 and he immediately sweeps past the German as his wet tyres have better grip right now. Nothing the Mercedes driver could do.

    Lap 6
  • Button becomes the first of the front-runners to pit and he switches to full wets. Fernando Alonso follows suit as does Nico Hulkenberg.

    Lap 6
  • Romain Grosjean has gone off at Turn 5. He made contact with Schumi earlier and he just lost the back of his car and went into the gravel. Another disappointing end for the Frenchman.

    Lap 5
  • Felipe Massa, Charles Pic and Timo Glock have all made pit stops and they have switched to full wets. Those on the wets are not yet setting the world alight timewise.

    Lap 5
  • Hamilton continues to lead the pack and his 2:05.093 set on lap two is the fastest so far. That is a long way away from the best times on dry tyres.

    Lap 4
  • Back to the Schumi first-lap incident, he was touched by Grosjean and took a 360 degree turn. Vettel also went off the track, but it wasn't a major incident.

    Lap 3
  • Kimi Raikkkonen is up in P8 with Kamui Kobayashi P9 and Felipe Massa in 10th place. Michael Schumacher has dropped to P16. Bruno Senna has also switched to full wets.

    Lap 3
  • Sergio Perez has already made a visit to the pits and he has switched to full wets. Button has also been told that it is raining very hard in the pitlane and they are ready to switch to wets.

    Lap 2
  • Looks like the rain has picked up again. Scrap that, it is pouring now. It's Hamilton from Button, Webber and Vettel. They are followed by Alonso, Rosberg and Maldonado.

    Lap 2
  • Look away now Schumacher fans. It is very wet on the back of the circuit and Schumacher made a poor start and he makes contact from someone and goes for a spin.

    Lap 1
  • Hamilton makes a much better start this time, but Button looks to go around the outside. Hamilton stays firm though. Ooh look at Romain Gorsjean he is up to P3, but Mark Webber is also there and he takes the position.

    Lap 1
  • Off they go on the formation lap and it's not a very good start for HRT as Pedro de la Rosa doesn't get away. He's pushed off the grid. Back at the front, there's plenty of spray at the moment.

    16:00
  • The tyre blankets are off and all the drivers have the intermediate tyres on at the moment. The track is still damp.

    15:59
  • Nico Rosberg has been told that the rain is very light at the moment, but heavier showers are just around the start. Race director Charlie Whiting could consider a delayed start if it starts to truly bucket down now. Doubt there will be a delayed start though.

    15:55
  • Rain, rain, rain!!! Yes folks, it is raining. It's a steady drizzle at the moment. On the grid, Adrian Newey is having a very close inspection at the Mercedes car.

    15:47
  • The Malaysian anthem rings around the Sepang circuit.

    15:45
  • Red Bull's tyre strategy has been a big talking point overnight. Will their decision to put Sebastian Vettel on the hard tyre turn into a master stroke or will it backfire. All will be revealed soon.

    15:45
  • It is dark, very dark at the Sepang circuit and it looks like it could be spitting with rain any moment now. Let's all spare a thought for the grid girls. At least some of them have umbrellas to protect them from the rain. Others can drape the national flags of the drivers around them should the weather get too unpleasant. That ladies and gentlemen is your weather forecast for this race over and done with. Oh, I forget to mention it will also be humid throughout the race.

    15:40
  • Pit lane is now open. The drivers can make their way to the grid opting for one single lap or two in which case they duck back through the pits before exiting again.

    15:30
  • Mark Webber is alongside Schumacher with Sebastian Vettel and Romain Grosjean on the third row. It was to be Kimi Raikkonen and Vettel but the Finn was slapped with a five-place penalty for changing his gearbox so he drops from fifth to tenth. Fourth row is Nico Rosberg and Fernando Alonso ahead of Sergio Perez and Raikkonen.

    15:25
  • The second row of the grid though is where a lot of the interest lies in the build-up to the grand prix as Michael Schumacher is third, his best qualifying position of his comeback. But with rivals harping on about Merc's W-duct DRS-activated wing being illegal (despite the FIA twice giving it the go-ahead) any result Schumi secured today could be under threat as rivals could protest. Ross Brawn has already said he's tired of the threats as they "spoil the event, spoil it for the fans."

    15:20
  • Should be an interesting tussle at the front with Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button starting on the front row of the grid in a repeat of the previous round in Australia. Button won that battle, beating Hamilton into the first corner, and went on to win the grand prix. This weekend Hamilton will be wanting revenge!

    15:10
  • Welcome to coverage of the 2012 Malaysian Grand Prix, round two of the F1 World Championship.
