After what seemed to have been months of discussions, Jordan comepleted the 2004 season driver line-up when they announced Giorgio Pantano would be the team-mate for Nick Heidfeld.
After talks with several pilots, including the British pair of Justin Wilson and last season's starting choice, Ralph Firman, team boss Eddie Jordan opted to give a Grand Prix baptism to the 25-year-old Italian.
Jordan have an unenviable record for unearthing young talent and Pantano certainly comes with impressive credentials.
He is no untried youngster as he had already completed testing sessions with Williams, McLaren and Renault over the past three years.
He was a sensation in karting as a teenager collecting two world crowns.
That led into European F3 racing and he won the German championship in his very first season.
He won at Monza in his debut season in F3000 the following year and followed up with a fine overall second with three race wins in the Coloni team.
Jordan said: "Giorgio performed consistently with accomplished racecraft at the front of the field for three years in F3000 and he’s ready for the challenge in F1.
Pantano added: "I will be giving my all as I really want to guarantee them good results."
