Tiago Monteiro bided his time waiting for his big break and it was finally granted in 2005 thanks to Jordan, whose new owners Midland handed Tiago a second year in the big league.
Monteiro made a name for himself during his time in the French F3 Championship, finishing runner-up in 2000 and 2002 before moving to the Champ Car series the following year, where he claimed 10 top-10 finishes.
2004 saw a move to the Nissan World Series, while in 2005 Jordan gave him the opportunity to race in Formula One and he seized it with both hands.
He ended the year as the top rookie driver having scored seven points.
Six of those came courtesy of his podium finish at the six-car United States GP, while the eighth, secured at the Belgian GP, was arguably the most
impressive.
Monteiro also managed to finish all but one of the season’s 19
grands prix.
Deservedly the Portuguese driver’s speed and consistency have earned him a second season with Jordan, who as of 2006 will race under the Midland name.
