Since winning the British Formula Ford title with Haywood Racing in 1999, Kiesa has battled against a lack of funding to rise through the ranks of F3 and F3000. He raced in the British and German Formula Three series in 2001, and appeared in the Formula 3000 series in 2002 for G+M Motorsport, with limited success. Moving to the Danish-financed Den Bla Avis Formula 3000 outfit saw a change of fortune and an excellent season resulted in him being snapped up by Minardi for a Formula One drive after Justin Wilson joined the Jaguar team.
